Like many of you I loved the movie and the amazing CG jungle world of Pandora that JC created, but at the same time I found and still find how the Earth of that universe and how mankind is forced to live beyond horrifying the luckiest humans in that universe are the dead and the stillborn truthfully.
Now apparently some people actually believe the world is as dead as depicted in the film that is off course far from being the reality but to those people who apparently given their posts of "Look outside your window!" live in the middle of a garbage dump it is their perceived reality. We never got to see that much of the Na'vi and their culture so people are now expecting so much from them I fear they are going to be disappointed in the sequels when they realize they are not perfect demigods or anything like that. Even with their unique ability to connect to fauna and flora they are still as fallible as we are. Taw Tsutey showed that Na'vi are capable of petty jealousy although at the end he showed a lot of stature by burying all the ill will he had against Jake to join him against Quaritch and his murderous campaign.
But back on topic I find it incredibly depressing that humans cannot even hear songbirds in the mornings as we do, cannot snuzzle with a pet like a cat or a dog because they no longer exist as a pet owner that loves his dog I find that alone horrendous beyond belief.
That no matter where they go they literally have all become like bubble boy forced to live in a bubble outside or inside no matter where they go in the universe. I dare not imagine how denied an existence that must be. Now some would argue about submariners but even Submariners get to return to land and breathe unaided which is impossible in the Avatar universe.
Now I know that JC movies always have light at the end of the tunnel so without a doubt he has a way out of the quagmire he has created for this particular franchise.Still just having to live like that no matter where you go makes my skin crawl.
Before anyone jumps and say join some Eco group etc, let me remind you that this is about Humans and Earth of the Avatar universe. I do not think that we would ever allow things to get to the extremes we see in the movie, first the gross overpopulation in the movie given the current demographic winter most of the world is experiencing will make that scenario very, very unlikely. But we could still face some big problems with giant oil spills like BP's which is another topic entirely (I'll post a separate article about that).
One of the reasons I prefer crossover fics and RPs or AUs of Avatar where either humans at least some have been altered to tolerate Pandoran atmosphere or it takes place in an universe where Earth is not in the sorry shape we see in the original movie is precisely because I find it so depressing otherwise.
